There are a number of research data storage options available to you as a researcher at HIE. Each gives you a secure, backed up, and easy-to-access location for storing and working with your data. Suitability of either to your particular data needs is dependant on a number of factors, including volume and type of data, the degree to which that data needs to be accessed externally, how you generally process/analyse your data, as well as how you share and collaborate on your data.
HIE-Data2 (University share drive)
The HIE-Data2 drive is a HIE-managed share drive available on the University network. HIE-Data2 can be mapped to your Windows or Mac PC thus appearing as a normal folder in your system. The HIE-Data2 drive is typically used to store ‘smaller-scale’ data (typically < 100GB) and can be used to store a variety of different types of data.

HIE-Storage
HIE-Storage is a Linux-based environment for storing data and is hosted on the national ‘Research Data Services’ infrastructure (https://www.rds.edu.au/), and maintained by Intersect. HIE-Storage is typically used to host the larger datasets generated within HIE that may, for example, be generated through Next-Gen Sequencing facilities or by high resolution audio and video instrumentation. Any data however may be stored on HIE-Storage. Whilst built on a Linux environment (and thus allowing command-line interaction) HIE-Storage is also easily accessible using windows-type software (Filezilla, WinSCP etc).

CloudStor
Cloudstor is a service run by AARNET, Australia’s Academic and Research Network. Cloudstor operates similarly to dropbox/google drive in that it is an online service for data storage, synchronisation and sharing. It allows up to 1TB of free storage to Australian researchers (with more available on request). This service may prove useful for people’s project data that is being actively worked upon and that needs to be shared/collaborated upon with other users, all the while being backed up and versioned.
